Department Introduction

  Introduction

The department is one of the first Guangdong Provincial Hemodialysis Training Bases, a National Hemodialysis Training Base for County Hospitals, a Sun Yat-sen University Peritoneal Dialysis Satellite Center, a China Excellence Peritoneal Dialysis Center development unit, and a GCP Base for Renal Disease Clinical Trials.

  Specialty Features

The Department of Nephrology operates three outpatient consultation rooms and manages 48 inpatient beds, with an annual outpatient volume (including hemodialysis patients) of nearly 70,000 visits and around 1,800 inpatient admissions. The department is equipped with 69 hemodialysis machines (including those at the Kuichong campus) and five automated peritoneal dialysis machines. It utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including a global-leading water treatment system for hemodialysis, a centralized dialysate supply system, and an information management system for the Hemodialysis Center.

The department focuses on common, complex, and critical nephrological diseases, establishing unique specialties in clinical care and research. Its primary areas of focus include the diagnosis and treatment of IgA nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, minimal change disease, ANCA-associated vasculitis with renal involvement, lupus nephritis, and diabetic nephropathy. It has developed expertise in utilizing biological and targeted therapies, achieving high remission rates, low relapse rates, and minimal side effects in treating membranous nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and minimal change disease. This clinical effectiveness places the department at an advanced level within the Pearl River Delta region.

The department is also a leader in applying innovative concepts to hemodialysis technologies, establishing itself as a regional brand for blood purification. As one of the first blood purification training bases in Guangdong Province and the only national-level blood purification training base in Shenzhen, the department has trained a significant number of blood purification specialists for Shenzhen and surrounding areas.

In addition, the department has established a Chronic Kidney Disease Management Center, which provides stable follow-up care for over 2,300 patients. The department integrates clinical care, research, and talent development to build a highly specialized, technologically advanced, and patient-focused nephrology center, making it a key medical discipline in both Guangdong Province and Shenzhen.
